You Must Forgive to Be Forgiven


Old Testament Scripture on Forgiveness

“For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.” —Psalms 86:5 

“Forgive thy neighbour the hurt that he hath done unto thee, so shall thy sins also be forgiven when thou prayest.” —Ecclesiasticus 28:2 

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” —Isaiah 1:18 

“Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.” —Isaiah 38:17 

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” —Isaiah 55:7


New Testament Scripture on Forgiveness

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” —Matthew 6:12 

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” —Matthew 6:14-15 

“For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” —Matthew 7:2 

“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? until seven times?” Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” —Matthew 18:21-22 

“And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.” —Matthew 18:34-35

“Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:” —Luke 6:37 

“Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.” —Luke 7:47

FORGIVENESS IS NOT GUARANTEED

“And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.” —Jeremiah 13:14 

“And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of whoredoms.” —Hosea 1:7 

“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” —Romans 9:15 

Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.” —Romans 9:18 

“For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.” —Hebrews 12:17
