Facts about Green Tea


All Tea Is Green Tea

  • All real tea is from one plant.
  • Herbal tea is not real tea.
  • Real tea is made from the leaves of the shrub (or small tree) Camellia sinensis.
  • Black, oolong, green, yellow, and white teas are all from Camellia sinensis.

Fermented Teas

  • Green tea is a non-fermented tea.
  • Or in plain language, green tea is not allowed to discolor from rotting for taste reasons as are black teas.
  • Old and fermented teas can lose most of their health benefits from losing their nutrients through oxidation.

Oxidation of Teas

  • The main difference between black, oolong, and green teas is the degree of oxidation that is allowed to take place.
  • Black gets more oxidation than oolong which gets more oxidation than green.

Composition of Unfermented Camellia Sinensis or Green Tea

  • Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG is the most abundant catechin in green tea.
  • It is not found in black teas, because black teas are processed teas.

  5. Ash 5%

White Tea

  • Green tea is sold in tablet and capsule forms for those who do not drink tea but still want the many health benefits of green tea.
  • All teas contain polyphenols (strong antioxidants) but some claim the most powerful forms are contained only in green tea.
  • White tea is a special form of green tea. It is one of the most delicate teas available.
  • White tea is so named because green tea leaves are picked before they are fully open and while they still have fine white hairs on them.
