Rogers’s Technique Incorporated into “Step Out of It”

7 Steps for Stepping Outside of a Problem

  1. Recognize you are hearing mainly one side.
  2. Recognize what you are hearing exists in a duality.
  3. Recognize fully both sides of that duality.
  4. Sit with that duality until you fully experience its tension.
  5. Detach from the duality: don’t identify with it, attach to it, or own it in any way as about you.
  6. Step out of the stress (river) into triality.
  7. Enjoy a different approach such as acceptance, balance, clarity, coherence, compassion, five thinking positions, forgiveness, harmony, letting go, not about you, peace, quietude, triality, release, silence, simplicity, stillness, surrender, and understanding.

Notes & Information on “Step Out of It”

  • It is the sound of one hand clapping.
  • Secure both hands clapping.
  • Break the situation.
  • Worry both sides.
  • Let them have it.
  • Stop pushing and pulling on the river.
  • The only way out is through.
  • Stand apart.
  • Think outside the box.
  • Be tried by fire.
  • Face the music.
  • Roger’s technique at its best.
  • Don’t choose sides. The answer is not choosing sides.
  • Face, confront, deal with, bear, tolerate both sides, and hold both sides until full.
  • One side is often an appetite, belief, desire, feeling, intention, obligation, opinion, payoff, thought, or negative stress.
  • One side alone is: irrational, unreasonable, being stuck, negative stress, no-ting, an immovable object and an irresistible force colliding.
  • In some cases, the duality should be discounted and denied. This is the case for all dualities based on somebodies.

Some Dualities

  • Do be and don’t be.
  • Should be and should not be.
  • Is me and is not me.
  • Self as ego versus self as not ego.
  • Somebodies versus somebodies.
  • Two conflicting feelings and ideas.
  • I hate it and love it.
  • I hate doing it but cannot stop doing it.
  • I know I should not but I do it anyway.

Stepping Outside Does Not Mean Running Away

  • Does stepping outside of the problem mean that you lose the experience or the issue involved with the problem?
  • For example, you have a conflict when at-bat in baseball.
  • Going through this process does not mean that you can longer go to bat in baseball.
  • Rather, it means that when you go to bat it won’t be about you but only about the ball and bat.
