Self-Talk: Test for Ego or Self

Book cover for "Mind Your Ego"

Self-Talk Will Serve Ego or Self

  • Ego will help you to recognize, remove, and replace your ego: a.k.a. self-esteem.

Note About this Page

  • Normally, this website and the author’s books talk about self-talk as being ego-talk.
  • However, it is possible for self-talk to be about your authentic and original nature.
  • It is just a sad fact of life that for adults their self-talk and thoughts are almost exclusively about ego.

How to Test What Self-Talk Serves

  1. Does the self-talk think of you are the “knower”?
  2. Does the self-talk think of you as the “doer”?
  3. Does the self-talk think of you as being or becoming something?
  • If you can answer “yes” to any of the above, then that self-talk is serving ego.

Self-Talk Shoulds

The basic shoulds of self-talk:

  1. I should be this.
  2. I should not be that.
  3. I should do that.
  4. I should not do that.
  • The above shoulds can be used either for or against self.

Self or Ego

  • You need to know that the nature of self is as an amplifier, host, mirror, reflector, and transceiver.
  • You need to know that the nature of ego is thought and thought as you knowing, doing, being, or becoming something.
  1. Then you can ask if the self-talk is about what you should amplify or what you should know.
  2. Then you can ask if the self-talk is about what you should magnify or what you should do.
  3. Then you can ask if the self-talk is about what you should host or what you should become.

Thinking Helpful or Hurtful

  • Thinking that helps you to keep your true identity as a vessel is helpful thinking.
  • Thinking that helps you keep your false identity as concepts and images is hurtful thinking.
  • Serve ego and serve your own death as things and thoughts.
